Nurse Staffing Ratio Calculator

A nurse-to-patient ratio is the number of patients one nurse is responsible for on a unit. The calculation is census divided by the ratio, rounded up: you cannot roster four-fifths of a nurse. This calculator does that per shift across a full day, and shows you the shortfall against the staff you actually have.

Acuity-Based Staffing Calculator

Acuity-based staffing weights each patient by the amount of care they need, rather than counting heads. Instead of twenty-two patients, the unit has a weighted workload, and the nurses required are calculated from that. It is the number a flat ratio misses, because a flat ratio assumes every patient is the same shift.

Nursing FTE Calculator

A nursing FTE calculation converts a unit's workload into the number of full-time equivalent posts it must be funded for. Worked FTE comes from census multiplied by nursing hours per patient day, divided by the hours in an FTE year. The establishment is that figure multiplied by a relief factor, which covers the leave, sickness and education a worked figure ignores.

Emergency Department Staffing Calculator

Emergency department staffing is calculated from patient arrivals rather than from the number of patients in the department. Each arrival consumes a measurable amount of nursing time from triage to disposition, so the nurses a shift needs are its arrivals multiplied by hours per patient visit, divided by the shift length, plus the roles that exist because the door is open.
