Posting an open shift and letting staff claim it

Sometimes a shift needs one more person than you planned for, or somebody drops out. Instead of ringing round, you can post the shift as an open shift. Everyone who could legally work it is told, and the first person to claim it gets it. In this video we'll open up a place, post it, and watch a nurse claim it from her phone. Here's next week on the schedule, already published. Every shift has the people it asked for. But Wednesday is going to be busy, and the day shift needs a second registered nurse. Press Edit shift under Wednesday's day shift. The panel shows the shift's hours and how many people it needs. Change the number from one to two, and press Save hours. Close the panel. Wednesday's day shift now has an empty place, shown with plus Assign. You could put somebody on it directly, but this time we'll let the team pick it up. Press plus Assign on the empty place. The fill panel lists your people in order: your own staff first, then anyone further afield. People who can't work this shift stay in the list, greyed out, with the reason written beside them. The same rules decide who is offered an open shift: the right role, no clash with a shift they already have, enough rest since their last one, not on approved time off, not over their hours, and no lapsed or missing credential the shift requires. If somebody expected an offer and didn't get one, this is where you'll see why. Now press Post as open shift. You can add an optional bonus, and tick Urgent if people should be notified even during their quiet hours. We'll offer a fifty dollar bonus, and leave Urgent off. Press Post and notify. Everyone who is free and qualified for this shift is notified straight away, and the first to claim it gets it. Here's what one of your nurses sees on her phone. On My shifts, under Open shifts, the Wednesday day shift is waiting for her, with the bonus you offered. She taps Claim this shift. It's hers, and it moves onto her own list of shifts. If two nurses tap claim in the same second, the database decides, under a lock. Exactly one of them gets the shift, and the other is told it has gone. Nobody is ever double booked. Back on the schedule, Wednesday's day shift now shows both nurses. You didn't have to make a single phone call. That's open shifts. Open up a place or leave one unfilled, post it with an optional bonus, and let the first eligible nurse claim it. Only people who could legally work the shift are ever offered it, and the database makes sure only one of them gets it.

Posting one
An unfilled shift can be offered to everyone eligible for it. It appears on their phones and the first person to take it gets it.
Two nurses tapping claim in the same second is a real event, and it is handled where it has to be: inside the database, under a lock. Exactly one of them gets the shift and the other is told it has gone.
Why somebody might not see it
The offer only reaches people who could legally work it: the right role, no clash with a shift they already have, enough rest since their last one, not on approved time off, not over their hours, and no lapsed or missing credential the shift requires.
If somebody expected an offer and did not get one, their record usually says why.
In the app this lives at /app/schedule.
