What the work rules do

Rest, hours, shifts in a row and exclusion screening, in plain words: which refuse and which only warn.

For owners, admins and schedulers

You can leave them alone

Settings → Rules starts at sensible defaults: at least 10 hours' rest between shifts, a longest single shift of 16 hours, a warning after 6 shifts in a row and over 40 hours a week, no days-off rule, and exclusion screening off. They are checked every time somebody is assigned or claims an open shift. Changing one applies from the next assignment; nothing already on the schedule moves. Only an owner or an admin can change them, and pressing Save confirms it on the card. A note beside the Save button tells you if something has been changed but not saved yet.

The 'Everywhere' card is what every site follows. If one site needs different numbers, save its own card below and it overrides the one above.

Which ones refuse, and which only warn

Firm rules — least rest between shifts, longest single shift, days off a week (when set) and the rest owed after in-house call. An assignment that breaks one is refused unless a manager overrides it and writes down why.

Warnings only — most shifts in a row, most hours a week (shown as overtime) and how often in-house call comes round. You see the warning when you assign, and nobody is refused.

A part-timer's own weekly hours are not a rule here: put them on the person's staff record, under Contracted hours a week.

Exclusion screening, in plain words

The US government (the HHS Office of Inspector General) keeps a list of people banned from work paid for by Medicare or Medicaid. If you bill either, employing somebody on it can cost a fine per claim. You search the list yourself, free, at exclusions.oig.hhs.gov, and record what you found on each person's staff page, under Federal exclusion screening. MedAligna never runs the search for you.

With 'Use exclusion checks when scheduling' off, nothing changes on the schedule. Switch it on and somebody you recorded as on the list cannot be put on any shift, with no override, while anybody you have not checked yet can still be scheduled with a 'not yet checked' warning. 'Also block anyone not yet checked' is the strict setting: nobody without a recorded check can be assigned unless a manager overrides it. On a new roster that is everybody, so record your checks first.

In the app this lives at /app/settings/rules.
